ftp via NFS -- the Alex File System on Linux?

Has anyone tried to get the Alex File System (available from
ftp://alex.sp.cs.cmu.edu) on Linux?  I've been having problems with it.

I'd also be interested in modifying it to allow non-anonymous ftp access so
I can access my ISP's files via NFS.  Has anyone tried to do anything like
this?
