moving to Boston

It appears that my girlfriend and I will be moving to Boston, probably at
the end of August.  I don't know exactly what my job situation might be.
I may be getting a job to which I can telecommute to Berkeley (pretty
wild, huh?); but, I'm not sure how it'll all work out.  I'll probably know
better later.

My main questions to you-all at this point is: what is the housing
situation like in the greater Boston area?  Where are the reasonable
places to live such that public transit may be used for the daily commute?
