This isn't strictly true. You can use the Amazon recommendation system without ever buying anything from Amazon. That's what I do and have been doing. It does a pretty good job at recommending stuff (although I usually like underground punk rock which often is not available at Amazon; I guess your system would have an advantage there). I am especially impressed how books recommend music and music recommend books (also, how kitchen appliances recommend books and music, too; that is just too cool). It's too bad you don't work for Amazon. I think having both together would be an ultimate powerhouse. (I also wish that Amazon offered a wider range of products. I would love to enter and rate everything (not just books, music, videos, electronic devices, and kitchen appliances) I own and have it do recommendations (based on collaborative filtering) for the rest of my life, especially if I can continue to avoid having to buy anything from Amazon. :-) http://www.audioscrobbler.com
