This isn't strictly true. You can use the Amazon recommendation system
without ever buying anything from Amazon. That's what I do and have been
doing. It does a pretty good job at recommending stuff (although I
usually like underground punk rock which often is not available at Amazon;
I guess your system would have an advantage there). I am especially
impressed how books recommend music and music recommend books (also, how
kitchen appliances recommend books and music, too; that is just too cool).
It's too bad you don't work for Amazon. I think having both together
would be an ultimate powerhouse.
(I also wish that Amazon offered a wider range of products. I would love
to enter and rate everything (not just books, music, videos, electronic
devices, and kitchen appliances) I own and have it do recommendations
(based on collaborative filtering) for the rest of my life, especially if
I can continue to avoid having to buy anything from Amazon. :-)
