One way to think about those limits is that conventional regular
expression syntaxes are linear; therefore REs poorly match the tree
structures of data such as XML or HTML documents. Martel, a Python
module, provides parse trees as a SAX stream. This opens up whole new categories of
parsing and matching requirements to practical regular expression
solutions. Especially important for Dalke are bioinformatics data formats. Martel is apt enough for
these that the Biopython
Project includes it.
