Bummer about the bike!  From Kathryn, it sounds like the derailer indeed
needs to be replaced -- if the spring is broken, then it's probably
hopeless.  I highly recommend that you let Will fix it -- pay him a repair
fee for it.  It should be easy to fix.  Also, he needs to repair it so
that this doesn't happen again.  It sounds like the problem was that it
let you switch gears past 5th gear into the spokes.  It shouldn't have let
you shift to that point and there are those little screws I was telling
you about that prevent that from happening.

It wouldn't pay more than $15 to get it fixed.
