Laurence Gonzales makes the big assumption that people have a drive to live, what could be called the Darwin assumption.  Some people and other organisms feel that death may not be a terrible option to the possible risk.  I suspect that most people would not be willing to subject themselves to that risk.  And that's the truly Zen vision of life.
