land of the lost

Lost mail, that is. I just called 'em and here's what I found out:

1) Forwarding is actually done at the Oakland station.
2) The change-of-address date was 9/13, not 9/12 as we had supposed. But,
the person I talked to there said that the mail would just be sent back
to Oakland for processing if it were received at the where-I-live Post
   Office.
3) There is no new owner of the box. So, it's unlikely that my paystub
fell into the hands of "the evil ones" (as G.W. would say).

#3 is the most relieving. That may just mean that the mail got lost
somewhere in the USPS system. Which is likely to be OK.
