>From good friends at the Train Riders Association of Ca (TRAC)... --eugene TRAC E-Bulletin #07-67 Type: Legislative Alert Source: Odyssey TRAC Members & Associates-- State Transit Funding Still at Risk! Over $1 billion in state funding for public transit is still at risk since our last alert! Final budget negotiations are underway right now between Governor Schwarzenegger, Senator Perata, Senator Ackerman, Assemblymember Nunez, and Assemblymember Villines. These five top state elected officials will decide - maybe even this week - whether a transit funding cut will happen and, if so, how deep it will be. As you know, the deeper the cuts, the more transit agencies may have to look at cutting services or raising fares. We encourage you to make two simple phone calls. Please take a moment to call the Governor's office and one of the other state leaders to express your support for public transit funding. Step 1 ======= Call Governor Schwarzenegger at 916-445-2841. Press 1 to continue in English Press 2 to voice your opinion on legislation Press 0 to speak to a representative Suggested message: I'm calling to ask Governor Schwarzenegger to fully fund public transit and to work for a long-term solution to protect and expand public transit funding in future years. [Tell the staff person why you care about public transit -- such as ability to access daily needs, transportation to work, global warming, reduced traffic congestion, or another reason.] Step 2 ======= Call the state leader closest to where you live or work: Senator Don Perata (Bay Area) 510-286-1333 or 916-651-4009. Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (Los Angeles area) 213-620-4646 or 916-319-2046 Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman (Orange County area) (714) 573-1853 or (916) 651-4033 Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines (Central Valley) (559) 446-2029 or (916) 319-2029 Suggested message: I'm asking Senator/Assemblymember ____________ to oppose the Governor's proposed $1.3 billion in transit funding cuts. I want the Senator/Assemblymember to fully fund public transit and to work for a long-term solution to protect and expand transit funding in future years. [Tell the staff person why you care about public transit in your own words.] NOTE: The staffer may tell you that you should call the Governor. You can say that you already did, but that you want to be sure that the Senator/Assemblymember strongly supports full funding for public transit. -- Alan C.
