> sputnik" is pronounced "spoootnik", i.e., a hard "u". That's the Russian > way -- perhaps true to his heritage? yeah- thanks- hope he says it the Russian way!!! Goin' back to his roots. I don't know if I shared this e-mail response from Uncle Jim- if I did- PARDON ME. J: Had you met Dick in 1957? I remember the story and his father's coup, but I can't remember if Dick was part of the the Point Beach crowd at that point. B: *Here?s the story: It appears that you may possibly never heard it. I was in Mr. Malloy?s class in 1957 age 11. Mr. Malloy was on a leave of absence for about a month (I think that I heard later he may have had a breakdown). Anyway- the substitute teacher was extremely interested in science- as I recall- and took us on a class trip to Southern Connecticut State College to visit the planetarium. He was eager to take us there because of the observation of Sputnik in October. I do remember speaking to Professor asking questions- which was pretty unusual for shy me. He didn?t however pat me on the head and say your are going to be my future daughter in law and I certainly hope that you aren?t a Catholic!!! Dick didn?t meet the Point Beach crowd until 1958- when I asked him. We (Dick & I) didn?t meet until 1961. Mom did her usual research regarding The Browns notifying me that they were Jewish and pointed out that it would be a good idea not to get involved. Obviously I did not take her advice.
