OK, I created an Ubuntu CD which may work. I'll try to find time to send
it tomorrow.
What I did was go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download , selected
"server" and also selected "Check here if you need the alternate desktop
CD" below the "Start Download" button, downloaded the ISO image, extracted
its contents into a directory, added "jove" (it already had gcc), created
another ISO, and burned it onto a CD. I tested it and it seems to boot.
Whether it will work beyond that (i.e., installs properly) is anybody's
guess.
