Subject: line says it all. Today, the ATU 265 (who represents the bus
and light rail operators and mechanics) will be voting whether or not
to go on strike. Contention with VTA management is over wages
(3%/year for the next 3 years) and benefits. State mediation on this
issue has failed so far to yield a solution. If the vote passes, a
strike would be authorized for September 8.
As with any transit strike, passengers like us will be the biggest
losers. Our group will need to be prepared with contingency plans for
the strike. I don't expect VTA to have any such plans.
What carpooling ideas or other commute alternatives do you have in
case VTA's buses and light rail do not run on September 8? Let's make
our own alternatives to a possible transit strike.
