Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Meeting of his LS students with Brian Harvey at 6:00 pm June 30 at BBN Technologies. Please reply to this message asap if you can make it. And pass it along to any of Brian's students at LS who may not be on our list. If you are not local or can't make it, and would be able and willing to join us through Skype, let us know and we'll see if we can set it up. Purpose: There is general agreement among Brian Harvey's students at LS that the experience they had there was unusual in many ways. Judging from the number of ex students who have maintained touch with Brian over the years, that experience had an educational impact that is worth capturing. Some teachers who were involved with Brian - Alison Birch, Larry Davidson, Phil Lewis - have talked often with others about their take on that experience. Among them is George Lukas, a computer scientist and recently retired professor at UMass. George is very much interested in the nature of Brian's experiment in "apprenticeship learning" that he has heard described, the social environment and its impact on education, and the "school within a school" exemplified by the Computer Users Society. George is knowledgeable about and active in videotaping and has a friend, Henry Felt, who makes documentaries. He proposes interviewing graduates about their experience at LS with a view to producing a documentary. If we can get enough attendees, this will begin at the meeting on June 30 at BBN technologies. If you have any memorabilia from your time at LS, please bring it along! The agenda: 6:00 pm various room-temperature finger food, beverages, greetings. 7:00 - 9:00 interactive group interview managed by George and taped by Henry. 9:00 - up to the group." Directions: From Fresh Pond Circle drive up Concord Ave toward Belmont. You will enter BBN technologies (whose main entrance is at 10 Moulton Street) by the cafeteria entrance accessible from the Fawcett Street parking lot. Take the second right (after leaving the circle) on Fawcett Street and enter the large parking lot on the left after passing about two-thirds of its length. The cafeteria should be in front of you. It is a low beige building about 250 feet from Concord Avenue behind the main BBN brick building. Park in the lot and enter the cafeteria through the small glass enclosure (it has a ramp) that seems to jut out into the lot.
