I reminded him we want to have it done > ASAP. OK, I called Lenny. He seems to be a general contractor and he went over the entire inspection report. (I didn't even know he had a copy.) The flue is definitely a problem, but most of the plumbing stuff is not a big problem. There may be issues with the heating system, but, like the plumbing, is not urgent. He suspects that almost everyone in the neighborhood has the foil insulation and the knob-and-tube wiring and that the city of where-I-live probably wouldn't consider it to be a big safety issue (but he isn't sure). Apparently, the knob-and-tube wiring is used for the overhead lights and may be used for electricity in other parts of the house; so, disconnecting it is not a viable option. The only thing he suggested was to hire some small-bodied person to pull up the insulation on the parts where there is wiring running through the beams. (It sounded like that would take several hours to accomplish.) Basically, the problems are small enough that they can wait until after we move in. I told him we'd give him a call later after we've settled in to finish up any work that needs to be done (probably the issues with the flue, foremost).
