stumbler's BC recommendations

Welcome in advance to Vancouver.

I would recommend Commercial Drive, Granville Island, Chinatown, Gastown, Stanley Park (if it is open right now - there was a big windstorm that knocked out hundreds of trees), Grouse Mountain, Whistler Village, Capilano Suspension Bridge, there are many other places in BC but they require some more travel.

[Ack. Typos. GeorgiA Straight newspaper. And I just remembered, if you were
just looking for views, Burnaby Mountain has some stunning views of
Vancouver, and looking north. It's where Simon Fraser University is
located, and there's a park just below the uni as well.]

Hey! Are you guys just passing through or are you spending time here? I
like wandering around Commercial Drive (accessible by bus or Skytrain),
Main Street has some good eating between 8th Ave and 30th, I think Stanley
Park is still shut down after the wind storms we've had, unfortunately,
but you can head towards North Van up towards the mountains if you wanted.
Lighthouse Park in West Van (on the North Shore) is nice and
underappreciated. If you're into hiking (and have a car), going out
towards Buntzen Lake beyond Port Moody is really nice. Or heading up to
Whistler, though that's pretty much just a ski resort town. But if you
want to see the mountains it's pretty, and pretty close by.

If you're into seeing things, the Georgie Straight is the listings paper,
free in newsboxes on Thursdays, though it doesn't have small, underground
event listings. I'm trying to think of where those can be found, but I'm
drawing a blank at the moment. But if you were interested in something in
particular, let me know. Local community radio stations often have
interesting stuff mentioned (and if nothing else, better radio shows for
when you're driving) and the big 3 here are CJSF 90.1FM (my station!),
CITR 101.9FM, and CFRO 102.7FM. If that's of interest for you. Oh, and two
good vegetarian restaurants (even if you're not veggie) are The Foundation
(Main & 8th) and The Naam (24hrs, West 4th & Macdonald? Out towards UBC).

That's all that's immediately jumping to mind right now. It's late and all
that. :) But if I think of anything else, I'll let you know. If you have
any specific questions, I'd be happy to (try to) answer!

Sarah
