When it says "Connecting", try hitting the Escape key and then click on the email. Alternatively, try clicking on the "Inbox" on the left and then click on the email. To me, it sounds like Firefox is trying to run some Javascript but failing. Another possibility is that, if you're using Firefox on Windows, it's likely some security thing that's blocking it. Try going to the Control Panel and typing "firewall" and see if there's anything there.
