This week I visited the 5th Avenue Seismic Retrofit project along the I-880
Corridor in Oakland.  To see photos, please click here.

Built in 1949, the 5th Avenue Bridge is one of the most structurally
deficient bridges in Alameda County.  Because the old structure is
vulnerable to damage in a major earthquake, Caltrans is replacing it with a
new bridge that meets modern seismic safety standards while greatly
improving traffic flow.

The 5th Avenue Bridge will cost an estimated $130 million â?? $119 million of
which comes from the Federal Highway Bridge Program.  The new bridge is just
one part of the I-880 Corridor Improvement Project, which includes eight
separate construction projects located in a 15-mile segment of the freeway
between Oakland and where-I-live.  Projects like this create thousands of
good-paying jobs, make our commutes safer and quicker, and help our regionâ??s
economy stay competitive.

As Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, I have
been working across the aisle on a bipartisan transportation bill, Moving
Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21), which will create or save
an estimated 170,000 jobs in Ca and more than 1.8 million jobs
nationwide in each of the next two years, plus up to 1 million additional
jobs through an expanded transportation infrastructure innovative financing
