Actually, he had to choose a secondary skill. I think he chose
electrical.

I was thinking about the fact that he wants to do carpentry. If it's
not too late, I would try to switch to either electrician (preferable)
or plumber (less desirable). There would be more working opportunities
with those skills.
OTOH, if he wants to live in the woods alone, carpentry would be
excellent.
