The 1989 Loma Prieta was fun. I did completely the wrong things. I was working in Alameda on the part built on all fill dirt -- the jello quality stuff. When it first started shaking, I was convinced it was "The Big One" (it wasn't, not even close) and I ran out of the building as cubicle partitions fell around me. I got outside, along with other people who also did the wrong thing. It was weird seeing the ground move in waves, up and down, like water. Afterwards, I felt a little guilty because, although the building was fine and there was only minor damage over all, I was looking to save my own skin while leaving my co-workers behind in the building. It would've been just fine if I had stayed in the building. The ceiling foam stuff would've just fallen around me and just a few of the huge, heavy monitors would've toppled. So, only now I know -- dive under a desk and just grab onto something.
