Bicycle stolen from back of 690 units 10 Oct

Jim Irving from Japantown

I was looking out the window of my house on near Taylor St and noticed a person with a skateboard that I did not recognize as living in these particular units, walking behind the building. When he got to the end of the driveway behind the buildling, he looked back almost as if to see if anyone was watching. That raised my suspicion and awareness. Soon he walked out of a gate on the side of the building walking a bicycle. I decided to follow him and got all the way over to 5th and Mission. He kept looking around and I finally said, "that's a nice bike" and he turned around and said, "Is it your's?", so I decided to play with him and say, "Yes it is!" He dropped the bike and took off.
I did take a photo of him when he was still on and unfortunately it's not of use. I did call the SJ police from the point I recovered the bike and gave them a description; A hispanic male, carrying a 3-4ft skateboard, wearing baggy clothing with short-cropped hair.
When I got back to my house I went to the building from which the bike was stolen and the owners were not home. So I will return the bicycle as soon as I determine the owners.
I then went around to the neighbors I knew to let them know to watch their belongings.
Fortunately I work from home so I can somewhat keep an eye on things, but please, neighbors, let's look out for each other!
I also told the neighbors that hadn't yet heard of Nextdoor.com to sign up so we can try to stay informed.
Jim
I do realize I am sending this out to my Japantown neighbors and 8 other neighborhoods...I hope everyone finds this useful.

Great story Jim! Thanks to u, someone will get their bike back and maybe this guy will think twice before stealing!

I wonder if the bike locked up? Sadly, folks need to lock doors, windows, bikes, scooters, etc. etc. etc. lest they grow legs and "walk off."

Thanks for keeping a watchful eye, but also for taking the time to post on Nextdoor. I think this could be a great tool for all of us, especially if used often. I believe "the more information, the better".
