You need to keep the laptop on while doing the switch.  Switching off the
laptop, doing the switch, and then turning it on again hoping that the
switch will work probably won't do it.  In other words, this should work:

 1) Laptop on
 2) Switch
 3) Laptop off

This probably won't work:

 1) Laptop off
 2) Switch
 3) Laptop on
 4) Switch
 5) Switch
 6) Laptop off

The concept to keep in mind is that you need to keep power to the
switching device at all times.  So, turning off a computer while still
switched to it will cut the power and sever the connection.  Switching
away from the computer before turning it off is probably a better
strategy.
