Is it only the Mercury-News web site?  If so, it may be their problem.

I just looked on your machine.  It looks like Firefox is eating up a lot
of CPU, for some reason.  I think I'll have to figure out what's going on
when I get home -- please remind me after I get home.

If there is an urgent web site you need to get to, you can use Chromium.
