Did your friend try "presentation mode"? That may kick the external
monitor into working. Hard to say.
It's possible that there is just a missing driver. In that case, you'll
need to find the make and model of the project, do a google search, find
the driver, download it, and install it.
Also: since Windows 7 will not be supported soon (probably next year, but
who knows?), it may be worth trying Windows 10. It may have a better
driver. (Most people already have Windows 10 downloaded onto their
computer since Macrosoft was "nice" enough to download onto your computer
for your "convenience".)
