 1) Make sure the printer is on.  Press the power button and wait for it
    to say that it's ready.
 2) Pull open the slot in the front of the printer for scanning.
 3) Stick the paper in, text side down.
 4) On your Mac, bring up SimpleScan via the Menu button.
 5) Click on scan.
 6) Save the .pdf to somewhere, perhaps Documents.
 7) Email the .pdf file back to yourself.
