When I was at The Evergreen State College in the Computer and Society
program, Beryl Crowe and York Wong would always argue back and forth:
Crowe thought that history was driven by ideology (Herbert Marcuse, etc.)
and Wong thought that history was driven by access to material goods
(Hobsbaum, etc.), as a good Marxist would.

It is indeed comforting that you will never have to give up your earthly
acquisitions as long as you think the right thoughts.

But, I'm not sure that Nancy Pelosi would ever let the economy slip into a
depression, no matter what happens.  So, fascism is probably not in the
cards.  Yet.
