Here are my dicussion points for the meetup.
* the series was set during a time when slavery was being ended in Jamaica. Why?
* the Caroline character wanted July to be her friend at times, despite the mistress-slave relationship. Would this have been possible?
* as an appointed overseer, the Robert Goodwin character was tasked with making a profit on the planation. What are the problems with this?
* children of slaves were themselves slaves. What sort of perverse incentives could this create?
* there was an implicit hierarchy among the different slave positions. Was there there a reason for this?
* July's mother kills her father, Tom Dewar, to protect July. Did the Dewar character know that July was his daughter and would it have made a difference?
* after the slaves abandon the plantation, Robert Goodwin wants nothing to do with July. Was he always truly a racist?
* July's mixed race child, Emily, is taken by Caroline and Robert Goodwin. Why was this? Would Emily have lead a satisfying life in England?
