It didn't say not to retire early.  It said that you need to retire "at
the right time" in order to have enough to live on.  If you have enough
savings before starting to receive social security, then that would
obviously be the best.

The other nice thing about social security is that it tracks the consumer
price index, unlike any sort of savings plan that you could think of,
including pensions.
