I don't know.  I think the question you have to ask yourself is: could
Hitler have been defeated by non-violent protests?  If you answer "yes",
then having all these countries roll over just may make sense.  If you
answer "no", then violent conflict is the only option, and it won't be
pretty, even if it ultimately ends up costing Russia a whole lot.
