OK.  Then, I assume that the spam were definitely being sent from my IP
address and not from outside of the range of sonic.net's domains.

I am unaware of any device on my LAN which has been compromised.  A sample
might've pointed me to which device or computer might have been
compromised.

I suppose that, when this happens again, I'll have to call Sonic.NET to
get my account re-enabled.
