This explains the "what", but doesn't explain the "why". The "why" is
that she pays attention to the noise which is a tangible, explanable
distraction, but the decline in her position is not explanable -- at
least, not to the character. In fact, it's the music and sound which is
only thing grounding the character, everything else is up in the air.
I still think the story is brilliant, especially if viewed in the context
of something like Kevin Spacey, in which he was cancelled even before all
the facts became known: this story could've only been told with a woman at
the center of it.
