I think no matter who the female protagonist was, somebody would've been
offended. The protagonist would have had to be a woman in order for this
story to work. Maybe the protagonist could've had another more popular
vocation, 'tho, and that might still have worked -- perhaps president of a
university or something, and that could've offended fewer people.
