When the battery on Noelle's old Samsung bulged, I was still able to use SmartSwitch to transfer all the data. I stored it on an SD card on the old phone and plugged it into the one. Because the differences in the OSes were quite different, not all the settings transferred (ringtones were the most obvious), but a lot did. You can also use Google Back-up, but, like I mentioned before, it supposedly doesn't do as well at transferring all your settings and apps. Also, even with high speed internet, it takes a while (> 10 mins) to back-up to Google. It's pretty outrageous that Geek Squad refused to work on a phone with a broken battery. I imagine that that is the most common phone failure. (And laptop failure, too.)
