Basically, the biggest challenge has been that a small set of people are
trying to transfer knowledge of entire product and millions of lines of
code to another (larger) team. There are a lot of details which have
evolved over the last 20 years that the product has existed, which even I
didn't know about.

I got a contact from a recruiter just today about this, so I suspect that
you're right that I'm a bit luckier in that respect.

It doesn't need a phone number for connecting. (I think the Simplex
instant messenger is similar, but I haven't tried it.) Session has other
flaws that Signal does not suffer from, but it has some other advantages
(such as not being tied to a phone number). Session's primary
disadvantage is that the app only allows a single identity; the developers
are supposed to expand it to allow multiple identities, but don't know
when that will come.
