And I know he was a conservative. I really cannot imagine most conservatives these days appreciating this sort of sarcasm these days; actually, some liberals have a hard time with sarcasm, too, but probably more than conservatives. Seems like many people have just learned not to appreciate sarcasm or to even question their own institutions or reality. (I guess Bill Maher falls into a special category where you can be a centralist and still be sarcastic, even if sometimes he punches "down" instead of punching "up".) Didn't Caroline Casey have something to say about satire? Something about the idea of keeping two contradictory ideas in your head at the same time? You have to think hard to understand sarcasm.
