The C. Thi Nguyen book about the downsides of metrics and the
"quantitative self" is relevant here. "This ends up meaning that we can
minimise our presence in the world and maximise time spent working and
online, which also means maximising alienation and isolation" pretty much
sums it all up best -- technology is very good at separating subjects from
objects, including other people. This really is a problem with invention
and the human condition, unfortunately. (I'm starting to sound like a
primativist.)
