I sometimes think about things like bicycles. There are some things were
you do have to keep moving in order for it to function as designed.
Airplanes are another example. Music is in some ways similar in that you
can't just stop and continue for it to make sense. There may be others.
OTOH, there are a vast number of things where stopping is perfectly fine.
You don't lose your balance while driving a car, you can stop nearly
mid-step while you walk, and talking get interrupted and then pick it up
later.
Anyway, Alfie Kohn has a counterargument to the grit/resilience model:
