Hi South Bay Veggies, neighbors, and a few others! As many of you know, the South Bay Veggies have been having an annual July 4th vegan potluck and barbecue for decades, but our usual location is unavailable this year. So, we will be celebrating at the Pomeroy Green clubhouse this year, and vegetarians/vegans/those looking to go more plant-based are welcome to join us.
Location: Pomeroy Green clubhouse (middle of complex on NE corner of Pomeroy Ave. & Benton St. in Santa Clara)
- Food and/or beverages to serve 6-8 per family member (over age 5) attending. (For a couple or family with kids, it could be one large dish or a combination of more than one.) While you yourself, or all of your family members, do not have to be vegan to attend, your contribution does. That means no meat, dairy, eggs, or honey --- i.e. all plant-based.
- Plate, utensils, cup, and napkin for yourself and family members. (We may be able to scare up some ancient paper plates & plastic utensils, but if you'd prefer a more solid dining experience, better to bring your own. This not only makes sense ecologically, but no one is stuck with a mountain of dishes or a big bag of trash after the event.) Also, if your dish needs a serving utensil, please bring that too.
- Swimsuit & towel if you want to swim. Current forecast is for the mid-80's that day.
R.S.V.P.: Please. And if you know what category your dish(es) will be, that would be helpful too. I can then say to anyone who has no idea what they want to bring, "we have lots of X, but very little Y". And we can supplement as needed too.
Note to South Bay Veggies and others who don't live here --- with one exception, there are ZERO guest parking spots on site, so I advise carpooling, riding your bike, or taking the bus. (Closest routes are 22 (offboard at Pomeroy & ECR) and 57 (offboard at Benton & Kiely)) The one exception is in front of our unit, but if you find a street spot on Pomeroy, that may be closer. In any case, we'll give priority for our spot to guests over 65.
And this is not the only event that day. For early risers, there's the
Rose, White, & Blue parade in where-I-live. I've gotten several invites from my representatives to join their contingent, so that might be fun. You can also just watch.
During and after the vegan potluck, there's the annual
Santa Clara City Picnic. Note that it's not at Central Park, but at Mission College, and fireworks are back! No cost, and times are 5pm - 10pm. I'm guessing the fireworks will start around 9pm as sunset is around 8:30pm that day. If you're thinking of heading up there, the city is trying to get a head count, so please register at
