living in denial

We all have to live in some level of denial and intentional "forgetfulness".

I often think of Ben Affleck finding that his family owned slaves.

). He badly wanted to paint himself as a "good" person, not only to lie
to himself but to the public at large. Now that everybody knows, he must
carry that knowledge for the rest of his life.
