ownership vs. the access economy

https://medium.com/westenberg/ownership-is-dead-the-access-economy-has-arrived-6f4982d16d2f I was just wondering if the dropping of slavery, particular in England and France, was the beginning of this "access economy" since renting (or temporarily employing someone) is more convenient since it's demand-driven. And, thinking of how we "own" pets, I wonder if this too will change where people will rent pets and return them when they can no longer be supported or become unwanted.
