These tips are a little more expert than me.

I do use filters gratuitously, but I also use the "unread" messages technique. I.e., mark them unread until I can either make a calendar item and fit a task onto my todo list. By the time I'm done processing my inbox, either my messages have been filtered and have been already marked "read" or all my messages have been marked "read". (At work, I leave everything in my inbox since gmail allows you to search mail messages so there's no need to delete messages. At home, I either archive the messages or just delete the messages.)
