The theory is, I think, that it was racial and cultural cohesion which allowed the rise of the socialist (and socialist-like) policies and, that with the introduction of this "new element", there is less empathy. All this is to say that it would probably be a lot harder to introduce socialism to the United States because of the inherent distrust that has been manufactured between racial and cultural groups over a long time span. (I've heard some say that this is why schools in Ca are going to hell because the white people don't care about the people.) Solidarity ain't what it used to be.
