People of privilege are those that temporarily have the luxury of “being cautious.” What is breaking my heart is that beyond the gig workers, who have become essential “front-line” employees, is the rampant rate of the disease in prisons, assisted living care homes and retention camps for immigrants, to say nothing of shelters for the homeless. This is affecting people of color to a much greater degree not only because of high population density and poor access to good food, but also because poverty and lack of access to medical carehas less to a whole panoply of underlying conditions that leave these populations more vulnerable to the disease. Not only that, they are often the “front-line” workers. As I was saying, my heart is breaking. I’m trying to figure out a way to be useful as a white ally but this generally leaves me very overwhelmed.
