I guess this is analogous to the two-body vs. three-body problem in physics. Two-body problems are trivial to solve, but three-bodies are difficult and often impossible. So, when you think about two people, one person's gain can be another's loss. But, when you add a third person or more, it gets much more complex and it can be difficult to decide who is actually winning or losing.
