This is like the prisoner's dilemma. If multiple parties give a little, everybody comes out ahead. The problem is that that itself is effort. In some ways, this is a recursive problem where the last piece cannot be resolved until all the work leading there can be resolved. It's also remarkable how people's perceptions can be so easily changed by changing how the issue is framed. Maybe in an ideal society, this exercise would be endlessly repeated until attitudes changed, sort of like the way egoism was treated in "The Dispossessed".
