I think the concept of automation completely replacing workers is not the
right way to think about it.  Rather, the real problem is that private
accumulation of capital, allowing the owners to buy this machinery to do
this work.  People wouldn't be so alienated from their work if they could
make the conscious choice to opt into using the machines.  No doubt, this
may slow down progress since older people would be reluctant to use the
newer machinery, but it would be much more humane and sane.
