I figure that there are the following options for the trip to Sonoma.

 1. We call off the trip.
 2. You go to Sonoma alone.
 3. We find a pet-friendly hotel.
 4. Put Gary up in a kitty hotel.
 5. Lock Gary and his food outside.

My thoughts about the above.

 1. I wouldn't mind this.  We can go on trips after Gary dies.
 2. I'll take care of Gary in this case.
 3. We'd have to starve Gary so that he wouldn't go to the bathroom at
    all.
 4. It may be too short a notice to find an opening, but, if we
    reschedule, perhaps the trip could be made at a later time.
 5. Gary may get injured in fights with other critters, and so may need to
    bring him to a vet when we return.
