I definitely learned to be frugal from my mom.  And while I did watch my
dad work on cars and televisions (and departed once the "shit"s and
"fuck"s came out), I never picked up on repairing either.  (Interestingly,
my sister did.)  However, I do know some things about cars because of
this, and, partially because of the electronics course I took in high
school, do know a little about electronics.

That said, not sure I could consider myself, nor even be on par with, any
professional.  (That includes software and programming.)  I do what I can
and, if it doesn't work out and I have to call up some who knows what
they're doing, I do that.

Mostly everything we have runs on rubber bands and duct tape.
