During the first 12 years of my life, we never had a new television.  My
dad would go to the dump and bring a few TVs home and figure out which one
was the easiest to fix, and that was our television.  📺

Similarly for cars.  🚗 We never had a new car all while I
was growing up.  (My dad would not get the cars from the dump, however.
Either he got them from other people or bought them used and in disrepair
and fixed 'em.)

It was definitely was not always a pleasant experience, however.  My dad
had anger problems and hearing expletives and seeing wrenches and
screwdrivers flying through the air was common.
