crime rates and statistics

What I saw years ago when I looked into the crime statistics in my
neighborhood after we moved here was that there was a lot of crime in
~2000, then it dipped, then it increased a little, then it dipped again,
went up a little during the pandemic (probably explains the break-in into
our place) and has been low ever since.  I guess this sort of analysis
takes something like a PhD in data science to really know the true story.
