Re: Trump's big 2020 election speech tonight

I think you're right. Formal press briefings would've been better because, according to Brave Leo, "Ronald Reagan did not stop holding press briefings specifically because of confirmed cognitive decline, though his frequency of formal press conferences dropped significantly during his second term, particularly after the Iran-Contra scandal in 1986–1987. " Interestingly, Reagan had pledged to leave office if showed signs of senility. I suppose if he had followed up with that, he would've been a great president in the tradition of George Washington. According to Brave Leo, he never did resign, however: Unlike current discussions surrounding Donald Trump or Joe Biden, where age and cognitive fitness are explicit political topics, the question of Reagan’s mental acuity was largely suppressed by his staff and family until after he left office. Reagan himself had pledged in 1980 to resign if he showed signs of senility, but no such mechanism was invoked, and he completed both terms while maintaining a schedule of public appearances, albeit with increasingly controlled media access.
