If you think of it ahead of time, before you buy an item from a seller,
you can force the seller to open an escrow account where you put the money
for the item.  Only upon satisfaction of the buyer is the money released
to the seller.

I don't have any particular technique in mind, but I think something could
be done with credit report items.  The main point is that it should be
built into the system and, ideally, be automated so both the crediter and
creditee can negotiate.
